3 Interview Tips for Introverts That Can Help Boost Confidence3 Interview Tips for Introverts That Can Help Boost ConfidenceJob interviews can be stressful for anyone, but introverts may have additional challenges to address and overcome if they want to stand out and shine in an interview situation. Utilizing a few tips can have introverts feeling more calm and confident.Speaking on behalf of other introverts, its leid simply the fear of speaking up thats a challenge, but also the fear of mis-speaking, being misinformed on a topic, and sometimes their own imposter syndrome, explains Nancy Wang, cofounder and CEO of nonprofit Advancing Women in Product andLead Product Manager at Rubrik, Inc.Here are some interview tips for introverts to help maximize their poise, presence, presentation, and peace of mind during any job interviewDo a strengths-based 360.To prepare for your interview, getting to know your strengths can be helpful in greasing the wheels toward higher confidence and a les s stressful interview experience for introverts. Becoming familiar with your best professional assets can help you lead from your strengths during the interview, and be remembered for your strengths after it. To that end, Lisa Sansom, founder of LVS Consulting, suggests doing a strengths-based 360 to review your talents and skills.Introverts have many great strengths as a collective demographic, and each introvert will have individual strengths and strengths constellations that make him or her successful, says Sansom. With this in mind, take some time before youre sitting in front of the hiring committee to think through the top assets that you bring to the role, and practice talking about them until you feel comfortable doing so.Own the interview.Wang suggests that introverts use what she terms the OWN system to gain confidence in interviews and other public speaking situationsO Especially if youre in a meeting surrounded by executives and hiring managers, says Wang, being well-pre pared for an interview will do wonders for your confidence to speak up and share your credentials.Dont W Get your main points in early, says Wang. If you wait until the end of the interview to speak up about what youve prepared, you may miss the chance to do it. Getting your key message points in early will help steer the conversation, which is what the hiring committee will remember about you.Never get into your own head. We are all afraid of saying the wrong thing and looking stupid as a result, explains Wang. To help with this, I recommend approaching your interview contact beforehand, if appropriate, and doing some prepping based on what you learn. If you already have an indication of what may happen during the interview- going back to point number one above- then youll be better prepared.Gain an edge through listening.Introverts can flip the script, moving the spotlight temporarily off of themselves during an interview situation to maximize their inherent listening powers. Mary York, who is a vice president at William Mills Agency and a self-described introvert herself, suggests that introverts can excel during interviews by focusing on their wheelhouse of really hearing others. You can then use that information to inform quietly impressive responses. For introverts who are often perceived as shy and quiet, use your listening skills to your advantage, said York. Be a careful observer and use body language to not just be a listener, but an active listener. Hold eye contact and lean towards individuals during conversations to build rapport and trust. And ask good questions. While interviews may feel harder on some levels if youre an introvert, its important to remember that you have some advantages in these situations, too. By getting to know your strengths, over-preparing your talking points, and using strategic listening to your advantage during your interview, youll be well-positioned to land that job.Know someone looking for a job?
